Slightly more than half (54%) of Spaniards watched one of publicly owned RTVE’s channels as of the second quarter this year.
According to the findings of the CNMC Household Panel, this was down from 65% in 2016. However, the number of viewers watching RTVE news content remained constant over this period at just over a third (35%).
The most loyal viewers of RTVE channels (La1, La2, Canal 24 horas, Teledeporte and Clan TV) were found among all age groups. Over two-thirds (70%) of Spaniards aged 65+ watched some public channels, 63% of those between 50-64 and 56% of those between 35-49. The age group with the fewest regular viewers was the one between 16-24.
Around four in 10 households with children approved the content broadcast on the Clan TV channel, with only one on ten disapproving. Furthermore, while 18% of individuals considered the content of RTVE channels lacked variety and quality, almost 30% valued it positively.
When asked about the objectivity of news reporting, four in 10 were indifferent, with one in five saying it objective or lacking in objectivity.
